Upcoming Engineering Entrance Exams 2026 — Dates, Eligibility & Which to Write

Most engineering aspirants write too few entrance exams, not too many. The preparation for MHT-CET, JEE Main, BITSAT and the private university tests overlaps almost entirely — same Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics syllabus, different question style and time pressure. Writing three or four instead of one costs a few thousand rupees in fees and a handful of extra weekends, and it multiplies the number of seats you can actually reach. For a Maharashtra candidate the non-negotiable one is MHT-CET, because it feeds roughly 85% of the state's engineering seats through the DTE CAP rounds. JEE Main is the second, both for the 15% All-India quota inside Maharashtra and for NITs and IIITs outside it. Everything after that is optional and depends on which colleges you would genuinely attend. Exact dates shift every year and are announced by each conducting body, so treat any calendar as indicative and confirm on the official portal before planning around it. What does not shift is the sequence: JEE Main session 1 in the winter, MHT-CET in spring, JEE Advanced and the private tests in early summer, then counselling from mid-year. Build the year backwards from CAP, because that is the process that will actually place you.

⚡ Quick Answer

A Maharashtra engineering aspirant should write MHT-CET (feeds ~85% of state seats via CAP) and JEE Main (15% All-India quota plus NITs and IIITs) at minimum, adding BITSAT, VITEEE or COMEDK only if those colleges are genuinely on the list. The PCM syllabus overlaps almost completely, so extra exams cost little preparation and multiply reachable seats. Confirm all dates on the official portals.

Eligibility — The Common Requirements

  • Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics compulsory, plus Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a vocational subject as the third
  • Minimum aggregate as notified for the year, with relaxation for reserved categories
  • Domicile and category certificates for Maharashtra state-quota seats and reservation claims
  • Age limits apply to some national exams but generally not to MHT-CET
  • Number of permitted attempts differs by exam — JEE Advanced is the most restrictive

How Many Exams Should You Actually Write

The marginal cost of one more entrance exam is low and the marginal benefit is a whole additional set of colleges. Because MHT-CET, JEE Main and the private university tests all examine the same Class 11 and 12 PCM syllabus, the preparation is shared; what differs is question style, negative marking and time pressure, which a few mock papers per exam will cover. The sensible default is MHT-CET plus JEE Main for everyone, adding one or two others only where you would genuinely accept a seat. Writing an exam for a college you would never attend is the one case where an extra exam is wasted effort.

Planning the Year Backwards from CAP

  1. 1.Register for JEE Main session 1 in the autumn and treat it as a calibration attempt.
  2. 2.Register for MHT-CET when the State CET Cell portal opens; missing this window cannot be recovered.
  3. 3.Write JEE Main session 2 after Class 12 boards, since the better of the two sessions counts.
  4. 4.Write MHT-CET in the spring window, which is the single most consequential exam for a Maharashtra seat.
  5. 5.Apply separately and much earlier to any deemed university on your list — their calendars run ahead of CAP and candidates routinely miss them while waiting for CET results.
  6. 6.Prepare documents for CAP registration during the gap between the exam and the result, not after it.

Where to Confirm Dates

  • MHT-CET and CAP — the State CET Cell portal, which is the only authoritative source for the Maharashtra calendar
  • JEE Main and JEE Advanced — the conducting body notification for the admission year
  • Private university tests — each university's own admissions page, since these change most often
  • Do not plan around dates from coaching sites or aggregators without checking the official notification, as provisional dates are frequently revised
