Using the Cutoff Data Properly

1. 1.Download the official round-wise cutoff PDFs from the State CET Cell for the last three years — these are the only authoritative figures.
2. 2.Filter to your branch, your category and your Home University status before comparing anything.
3. 3.Look at the trend across three years rather than a single year, since one anomalous year misleads badly.
4. 4.Group colleges into reach (2–4 points above you), realistic (within 2) and safe (5+ below).
5. 5.Include all three bands on the option form, with enough safe options that you cannot end unallotted.
6. 6.Decide your freeze, float and confirm response for each plausible Round I outcome before the allotment is published.

Why Branch Should Outrank College

The data in the table above makes the point on its own. The gap between CSE and Civil at a single college is routinely fifteen to twenty percentile points, while the gap between COEP CSE and PCCOE CSE is about five. That asymmetry exists because the market prices the branch more than the institution. For a student targeting software work, taking CSE or IT at a college five ranks lower is almost always the better trade than taking a core branch at a higher-ranked one — and the option form should be ordered to reflect that rather than to reflect college prestige.
